Fabricació de Surfacen, medicamento utilizado para tratar a neonatos con enfermedad de membrana hialina.

   Con 39 años, Elaine recibió la Medalla de Oro de la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI) por el SURFACEN, un producto utilizado para tratar a neonatos con enfermedad de membrana hialina. Ella desarrolló la tecnología para fabricar este medicamento a partir de pulmones de cerdos. A estos pulmones se les extrae una sustancia conocida como surfactante pulmonar, cuya composición es muy similar en todos los mamíferos, incluyendo al hombre.

Un científico japonés ya había logrado un producto con pulmones de bovinos, el TA o Survanta. La patente de este medicamento fue vendida a una poderosa transnacional de Estados Unidos que lo comercializa a precios muy elevados. El neonatólogo cubano, Olimpo Moreno, profesor consultante del hospital gineco-obstétrico Eusebio Hernández, lanzó la idea de esta investigación que fue asumida por un equipo de especialistas del CENSA.

Normalmente en nuestros pulmones existen sustancias que ayudan a inhalar y exhalar, los surfactantes endógenos. Cuando un niño nace antes de término carece de estas sustancias, debido a que los neumocitos tipo II, especializados en sintetizar el surfactante natural de los pulmones de los bebés, son de las últimas células que se desarrollan en el feto. La caracterización bioquímica y los primeros pasos en el control de calidad del medicamento fueron realizados por Wilma Alfonso Lorenzo, máster en Ciencias Farmacéuticas.

La producción nacional del SURFACEN cubrió todas las demandas del país el pasado año. Recientemente se inició un ensayo clínico del uso de este medicamento en el tratamiento del síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda en pacientes de 18 a 75 años de edad. Por la contribución que ha tenido este producto en la disminución de la mortalidad infantil en Cuba, recientemente la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI), concedió la Medalla de Oro al SURFACEN obtenido en el CENSA, institución científica que tiene otro reconocimiento similar anterior por el Stabilak, un conservante natural de la leche.
